Giant cell phone launched at GSM Africa 2006

The MTN Sciencentre has a new Giant Cell Phone, courtesy of sponsor Ericsson, designed and manufactured by MTE Studios. The monster Sony Ericsson W810i phone was unveiled at the recent GSM/3G Africa expo at the Cape Town International Convention Centre by Göran Soderholm of Ericsson South Africa and Martijn Lutgerink of Sony Ericsson International. The Giant Cell Phone was transferred to the MTN Sciencentre on Monday, 23rd October, and has full functionality in terms of voice, text, data, music, radio and photography.

The Giant Cell Phone is 2.5 m tall, which is 45 cm larger than the current world record for a functional cell phone, according to the 2006 Guinness Book of Records.

The new Giant Cell Phone will be the centrepiece of MTN Sciencentre's telecommunications exhibition, and will be used to teach visitors about how cell phones work and how to use the full potential of your cell phone. It will also be used as a focus for discussions on the role of technological advances and convergent technology in the shaping of society.
